NYC Guide To Plaque, Calculus, And Cavities

Dental Exam NYC

Hi. I’m Dr. Marc Beshar. Welcome to my NYC dental blog! I find that many of my patients in the NYC area get a couple of dental terms mixed up. Today, I would like to clarify the differences between plaque, calculus, and cavities.

Plaque is a film that covers teeth – a sticky layer of bacteria. You can remove plaque through daily brushing and flossing. However, if it isn’t removed it can build up and harden into calculus.

Calculus, also known as tartar, is hardened plaque that also accumulates minerals from food and saliva. Regular check-ups and cleanings with your New York City dentist are necessary to remove tartar as well as hard-to-reach plaque.

Plaque and calculus are not cavities, but they can lead to cavities. A cavity is basically a hole in the tooth caused by decay. Because plaque and calculus contain bacteria, the bacteria release acids which accelerate tooth decay and eventually lead to more cavities.

A good rule of thumb for NYC dental patients is this: Avoid plaque to avoid calculus and tartar to avoid tooth decay to avoid cavities and dental fillings. Got it?

I hope you’ve found this helpful, and if you’re in the NYC area and are in need of quality dental care, call our office at 646-434-1238 to schedule a dental exam today.

Our healthy staff would love to answer any questions you have about our services, including cosmetic dentistry, teeth whitening, and veneers.

Preventative Maintenance For Your Irreplaceable Smile In Midtown

Dental Exam Midtown

Hi, I’m Dr. Marc Beshar of Marc J Beshar Dentistry. If you are one of my existing patients, welcome back. If this is your first visit, I appreciate you stopping by.

My trust-building team and I love taking care of our Midtown area cosmetic dentistry patients.

Today’s article is for Midtown area people who are overdue for a dental exam and cleaning.

During dental deep cleanings, our hygienists thoroughly remove the plaque and tartar above and below the gumline. By scaling and planing, they remove areas where bacteria can easily multiply. If you are due for a cleaning, call us today at 646-434-1238.

After your teeth have been cleaned, I perform a thorough examination. I check for overall tooth and gum health, the presence of cavities, gum pocket depth, bite issues, and signs of oral cancer. With the advancement of dental technology, many of these issues can be checked with laser dentistry.

Some Midtown people mistakenly believe that they can skip dental visits if they don’t notice anything out of the ordinary. This attitude is risky. Many dental problems advance silently. When the patient experiences pain, much damage has been done. Gum disease, especially, often progresses unnoticed.

If you don’t have dental insurance, ask us about dental financing options. It costs far less to prevent problems than to treat them with restorative dentistry after they have become severe.

If you perform regular auto maintenance, you understand the wisdom of prevention. Don’t you value your smile far more than your car? Call Marc J Beshar Dentistry today to schedule preventative maintenance for your irreplaceable smile.

If Your Gums Are Swollen And Sore, Call Marc J. Beshar Dentistry

If you are a worried Manhattan resident experiencing inflamed gums or an aching tooth, you’re are not alone.

About one third of U.S. adults are affected by tooth decay, according to the CDC, and gum disease plagues one in seven people age 35 to 40. Don’t ignore these symptoms, call Marc J. Beshar Dentistry today at 646-434-1238 for immediate treatment.

At Marc J. Beshar Dentistry we take gum disease, sometimes called gingivitis, seriously because left untreated it can lead to loss of bone and tissue that support the teeth.

Gingivitis is a mild form of gum disease. You will know you have it if your gums bleed easily and look red and swollen. If this condition is not reversed it can lead to periodontitis. With this condition your gums become loose and separate from the teeth forming cavities that can become infected. This can spread to the bone supporting the tooth. If this is damaged, the tooth can be lost. (If you have already lost a tooth to gum disease, ask us about dental implants.)

At Marc J. Beshar Dentistry we recommend daily brushing and flossing and regular dental cleanings to help combat gingivitis. Our team has been offering periodontal disease treatment and other dental problems for Manhattan area residents since 1990.

If you want your teeth to feel fresh and bright, come in for a cleaning and dental exam. Don’t become a statistic, prevent gingivitis by treating your teeth and gums with the TLC they deserve. (After all, they work pretty hard for you day in and day out.)

My name is Dr. Marc Beshar and my staff and I at Marc J. Beshar Dentistry offer quality general and cosmetic dental services including dental implants, porcelain veneers, and
Invisalign invisible braces.

Take care of your beautiful smile by calling Marc J. Beshar Dentistry today.

Energy Drink Warning For Midtown

Midtown Smile Redesign Hello. I’m dentist Marc Beshar.

Welcome to my Midtown dental blog. Today’s topic is energy drinks and the damage they can cause to your teeth. I am seeing more and more Midtown teens and adults with tooth enamel erosion caused by frequent consumption of sport drinks.

Most of these Midtown dentistry patients take good care of their teeth, brush and flush, and come into Marc J. Beshar Dentistry for a twice-yearly exam and deep cleaning. But guess what? If you drink energy drinks regularly, your enamel can erode even if you practice immaculate oral hygiene.

Energy drinks like Red Bull, Rock Star, and Monster are a cocktail of powerful acids and other enamel-eroding substances. Most of them contain citric acid, fruit juices, loads of sugar, and a potent chemical that gives them their bright fluorescent color.

Perhaps, like myself, you have often noticed young people walking out of Midtown convenience stores swigging 32-ounce energy drinks. I am concerned that Midtown teens do not understand the serious dental consequences of frequent acid baths including periodontal disease.

The following is from ABC Sports:

“Sports drinks are increasingly damaging the teeth of professional and recreational athletes, one of Australia’s top sports dentists has warned. Dr. Brett Dorney says he has witnessed a huge increase in dental erosion since the Sidney Olympics, when he was the event’s deputy director of dental services.”

Here is an excerpt from a recent CNN Story:

“Researchers at the University of Iowa’s College of Dentistry found the energy drinks and sports drinks eroded the enamel more than soda and fruit juices.”

I need to add the caveat that soda and fruit juices also contain acids that can damage teeth.

If your teeth have enamel erosion, whatever the cause, we can restore your smile with advanced cosmetic dentistry. Crowns, porcelain veneers, inlays and onlays can correct both structural and cosmetic problems.

Our phone number is 646-434-1238. If you are interested in re-designing your smile, come in for an exam and consultation. With cutting-edge cosmetic dentistry, we can repair acid-damaged teeth and dramatically increase your face value.

Tooth Restoration in New York

Tooth Restoration in New York At Marc J. Beshar Dentistry in New York, we use a variety of restorative dentistry techniques to restore damaged teeth. Most New York dental clients are familiar with fillings. Traditional fillings are also called ‘direct restorations’ because they are applied to the tooth, shaped and polished in one visit.

Another type of filling is called an ‘indirect restorations’ and is fabricated in a New York dental lab. There are two types: inlays and onlays.

When a tooth needs more extensive restorative dentistry, a crown is often used. At Marc J. Beshar Dentistry in New York, we create strong, natural-looking crowns from a variety of materials.

What if the tooth is damaged beyond repair? There are a number of functional replacements for missing teeth. Dentures are not the only option.

Call 646-434-1238 to learn about the restorative dentistry options available. We have been improving smiles for New York and New York City patients since 1990.

Whether the damage is caused by decay, injury, bite problems, or natural wear; Marc Beshar DMD will choose the best dental treatment plan for your tooth restoration needs. Marc J. Beshar Dentistry is conveniently located at 25 Central Park W #1C New York, NY 10023 in New York. We provide quality dental care for families in Manhattan, Midtown, and surrounding areas.

Have A Large Cavity In Your Tooth?

New York Cosmetic Dentistry When cosmetic dentist Marc Beshar of Marc J. Beshar Dentistry in New York repairs a tooth that has decay or damage, the procedure chosen often depends on the location of the problem. (We’re talking tooth-specific locale here; it doesn’t matter whether you live in Manhattan, Midtown, or New York City.) If there is a chip, crack or cavity on the biting surface of a tooth, an onlay or inlay is often used to restore the tooth.

Inlays and onlays are a type of tooth restoration used successfully at Marc J. Beshar Dentistry. They are usually bigger than a conventional filling yet smaller than a complete dental crown. An inlay is used to fill an area inside the cusp tips or bumps of a tooth. An onlay covers an area that includes more than one cusp.

At Marc J. Beshar Dentistry, the inlays and onlays we place for our Manhattan clients are indistinguishable from their natural teeth. Dentist Marc Beshar has the finely-honed eye for detail and complete mastery of dental aesthetics to create an exact match.

Marc J. Beshar Dentistry inlays and onlays:

  • Are stain resistant
  • Do not cause tooth sensitivity
  • Are beautifully matched to natural teeth
  • When bonded to the tooth, they strengthen the tooth and prevent further decay or damage

Dental Sealants

New York Cosmetic Dentistry Dental sealants are a thin coat of clear resin that is applied to the biting surfaces of teeth, usually the rear molars. The back teeth are more prone to cavities because is difficult to reach them with a tooth brush and the surfaces contain pits and grooves that easily trap bacteria. It is hard for many adults to clean their back molars and almost impossible for our young New York City children.

Dental sealants put on by your New York City dentist, fill in the pits and grooves on the rear molars to create a smooth surface. New York City dentists most often recommend sealants for children’s permanent back teeth, though sometimes they are used for adults, too.

New York City parents may not realize how quickly a cavity can form in a young child’s mouth. Many New York City area kids that we see develop cavities even before they start kindergarten! It is vital that our local parents start regular dental visits early. The American Dental Association advises that a child’s initial dental exam take place soon after the first tooth erupts, but no later than the toddler’s first birthday.

Dental sealants protect teeth that have no decay (primary prevention) and also prevent further decay progression in teeth that show very early signs of disease (secondary prevention).

New York Dentistry

Educating New York Dental Patients About Little-Known Risks Hi, I’m Dentist Marc Beshar, DMD. Most every day, I can be found at my New York area dental office treating dental patients with tooth and gum problems or helping patients prevent them. There are many common medical conditions that pose a risk to oral health.

1) New York diabetes patients with high blood glucose often have a higher risk of dental issues. If you have diabetes, let’s talk. My number is 646-434-1238.

2) A persistent dry mouth due to an inadequate amount of saliva can accelerate tooth decay, cause or contribute to gum disease, and trigger chronic bad breath. Many medications used by thousands of Manhattan and Midtown folks, including those for high-blood pressure and depression, cause dry mouth. This side effect is not only unpleasant, it is dangerous. Anti-depressants (especially SSRI’s) and anti-psychotic drugs can also trigger tooth-grinding (bruxism).

3) Acid reflux in children and adults is associated with a host of dental problems such as decay and periodontal disease.

I help many New York City dental patients prevent problems associated with medical conditions that sometimes seem unrelated to dental health. Regular professional dental care is essential for oral health, and an important part of your overall physical health.
